The East Midlands Agenda: February 2026

February 2026 brings a wave of major developments across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and the wider East Midlands—spanning regional devolution, local authority leadership, clean‑energy innovation, aviation growth and long‑term economic planning.

The East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) has approved a landmark £500 million budget for 2026/27, accelerating devolved investment across the region. More than £290 million will be channelled through a capital programme, with over 70% dedicated to transport infrastructure, including highways upgrades, bus service improvements and neighbourhood safety schemes—strengthening the East Midlands’ case for greater devolved powers.

In Nottingham, Nottingham City Council is shaping a new long‑term Vision for the city’s future, focusing on housing, digital connectivity, transport and major development sites. Developed alongside residents, businesses and partners, the Vision will guide the city’s response to climate pressures, economic change and technological transformation.

The region’s aviation sector continues to grow as East Midlands Airport (EMA) progresses through the third year of its £120m expansion plan. With seven new international airlines and four million passengers already served, EMA benefits from its Freeport status and central UK location—placing 90% of the population within a four‑hour drive.

In Derbyshire, Neil Crittenden, formerly of Merlin Entertainments, has been appointed Chief Executive of Derbyshire County Council, bringing strong commercial leadership to the authority. Nearby, Chesterfield Borough Council has announced Christine Durrant as its next Chief Executive from May 2026.

Across Lincolnshire, Mayor Dame Andrea Jenkyns and the Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority have outlined an ambitious corporate plan focused on skills, living standards and future devolved powers.

Clean‑energy innovation also advances as UK Industrial Fusion Solutions opens its first public consultation on the STEP Fusion prototype plant at West Burton A—engaging communities across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.

Finally, the 2027 Tour de France Femmes will shine an international spotlight on the region, with stage two racing through the Peak District on its way to Sheffield.
