The East Midlands Agenda: November 2025

The East Midlands continues to strengthen its position as one of the UK’s fastest‑rising regions for innovation, advanced manufacturing and clean‑energy development. This month brings major updates across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, showcasing the area’s growing economic momentum.

In Derbyshire, Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK and the University of Derby have launched a Government‑funded research project exploring a new generation of small, lightweight battery‑electric vehicles. The study focuses on sustainable manufacturing, reduced road‑space use and advanced connectivity—reinforcing the East Midlands as a hub for next‑generation automotive innovation.

Strong regional partnerships also continue to take shape. The University of Leicester has expanded its strategic collaboration with East Midlands Chamber, deepening work on business intelligence and the region’s Quarterly Economic Survey. This strengthened relationship will help shape future economic policy and support local employers.

Leadership changes are underway in Derbyshire, where Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council, will step down in May 2026 after 18 years. During his tenure, Chesterfield secured more than £2bn of regeneration investment, playing a key role in regional collaboration.

Meanwhile, Erewash welcomes a major inward investment as Italian manufacturer Fassa Bortolo brings large‑scale production back to the historic Stanton Ironworks through a new factory at New Stanton Park—supporting plans for up to 4,000 jobs.

In Nottinghamshire, the STEP Fusion programme continues to expand, with office capacity at West Burton tripling to accommodate around 120 specialists. The project is expected to create thousands of future jobs and cement the region’s role in the UK’s clean‑energy transition.
